A new insulin injection solution from Novo Nordisk has been awarded an award for its innovative design, according to reports.
It has emerged that the company was given the honour of the 2008 Medical Design Excellence Award for its NovoFine Autocover needle which reduces anxiety and potential injury for diabetes sufferers.
The company claims that the product, which conceals the needle during injection, helps to put at ease the ten per cent of diabetes sufferers who also have a fear of injection and will reduce the number who consequently avoid treatment.
It is also claimed that an estimated 1,000 healthcare professionals in the US alone suffer injuries and infection as a result of accidental jabs from needles and that this is entirely preventable.
Citing research from the American Nurses Association, the company said in a statement that "more than 80 per cent of needle-stick injuries could be prevented with the use of safer needle devices".
Among the other winners at the event were Pinyons Medical Technology's PowrSyringe injector and Leading Edge's Gee Whiz male external condom catheter.
