| GE Healthcare announces research programmes ahead of Beijing Olympics | Posted on 07/04/2008 in Medical Company Product News GE Healthcare, part of the General Electric Company, a worldwide partners of the Olympic Games, has announced the launch of two research programmes to prepare for the event in Beijing this summer.
The programmes aim to show that health monitoring and early intervention can result in the prevention of injuries and consequently enhance the health and sports performances of athletes.
A cardiac clinical research study will involve athletes and hopefuls in the US men's rowing and weightlifting teams, while a second programme will monitor the musculoskeletal health of athletes in the weightlifting, boxing, wrestling and women's soccer teams.
Both these initiatives follow on from research studies conducted at the Torino 2006 Olympic Winter Games.
Dr Michael Reed, medical director of the performance services division of the US Olympic committee, said: "Every day an Olympic athlete spends in rehab is a day lost in training, making earlier injury diagnosis and real-time recovery monitoring crucial for elite performance."
"It is increasingly important that as a national Olympic committee, we have the most innovative tools to help predict, diagnose, treat and monitor sports injuries earlier to ensure a quick return to play."
He added his belief that ultrasound technology from GE Healthcare will become a standard tool for athletes.
Last month, GE Healthcare was named as the exclusive supplier of magnetic resonance imaging technology to the Beijing Olympics.Other news stories from 07/04/2008
