| Merial Animal Health issues vaccine to France | Posted on 03/04/2008 in Veterinary Supplier News Farmers in France are now vaccinating their cattle against Bluetongue following delivery of an initial 200,000 doses by Merial Animal Health, it has been reported.
The drugs production firm has been issued an emergency licence to provide the vaccine in that country, following an order made by the French government on March 4th, online resource the Farmers Guardian reports.
A spokesman for Merial Animal Health told the publication that there had been supply concerns following the closure of the Pirbright laboratory by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra).
"We didn't win back our SAPO licence from Defra for three months but stock of the vaccine was being produced at our plant in Lyon and has been waiting to go out," he added.
The Farmers Guardian suggests that as Europe builds up stocks of the vaccine, pressure will increase on politicians in both Scotland and Northern Ireland to order in their own supplies.
Defra has placed an order with Intervet for 22.5 million doses of the Bluetongue serotype 8 (BTV-8) vaccine, making it the first member state affected by the current northern Europe outbreak to order the precaution. Other news stories from 03/04/2008
