BACD issues letter regarding OTC whitening products

The British Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry (BACD) has sent a letter to UK dentists, addressing the recent EU report in over-the-counter (OTC) tooth whitening products.

It stated that a recent survey conducted on the academy’s behalf by Mintel Consulting, one-third of the British population have concerns over the appearance of their teeth.

Furthermore, research conducted by Trading Standards show that 18 out of 20 at-home tooth whitening kits contained levels of hydrogen peroxide which are illegal, the letter continued.

The BACD added that the whitening products available over-the-counter should be banned as they can be dangerous, counterproductive and in some cases simply ineffective.

“Proper whitening techniques should be taught in dental school, to ensure that every practitioner understands the principles and whitening procedures should be carried out only after examination by a dental professional,” it urged.

Figures compiled by the BACD show that more than a quarter (26 per cent) of Britons have undergone cosmetic dental treatments.
