GlaxoSmithKline: Smokers ‘unaware’ of quitting aid efficiency

Many smokers are unaware of the safety and efficiency of nicotine cessation aids which are available over the counter, a major pharmaceutical supplier has suggested.

GlaxoSmithKline published its comments as the Society for Research on Nicotine and Tobacco meets to discuss a new study which shows some smokers avoid such aids as they underestimate their usefulness.

This is despite such products being proven to double a person’s chances of ending their addiction.

However, a GlaxoSmithKline spokesperson stated: “The good news is that even if smokers held these misperceptions, about half of them stated they would be more likely to consider [nicotine replacement therapy] if they were shown scientific evidence that proves its safety.”

The NHS urges smokers to consider the full range of medicines available to help them.

It suggests would-be quitters consider products such as nicotine gum, patches, microtabs, lozenges, inhalators and nasal sprays in their attempts to beat their habits and advises them to seek advice on the best solution for them.
