Coloplast enters transobturator agreement with Caldera
Coloplast has issued Caldera Medical with a licence to use its transobturator method in the surgical treatment of female stress urinary incontinence (SUI).
The agreement gives California-based Caldera patent rights and it is the only privately-owned company in the world to have access to the treatment method, which is one of the most popular ways of treating incontinence.
SUI affects about 13.5 million women in the US alone and Caldera noted it can have a “profound effect on quality of life”.
Chief executive Bryon L Merade said: “Securing this important license allows Caldera Medical to fully exploit a wide range of development opportunities.”
He added that the company was looking forward to using the transobturator method in its “continued pursuit of best in class treatment options”.
A Coloplast study from October 2006 found that men were less likely than women to ask their doctor about treating incontinence and about 10 per cent of men experienced symptoms.
