The US Food and Drug Administration approved Boehringer Ingelheim’s application for the manufacture of a biological drug in pre-filled syringes last month, while the European Medicines Agency granted approval in July 2007.
Now the product will also be available in glass pre-filled syringes which marks the first time that medication has been offered in pre-filled syringes by Boehringer Ingelheim and reflects the growing trend towards liquid and user-friendly biopharmaceuticals.
The company also states that the move follows the expansion of Boehringer Ingelheim’s product portfolio in contract manufacturing with more of its drugs offered in pre-filled syringes.
Boehringer Ingelheim indicates that pre-filled syringes have several advantages over drug administration through vials and syringes.
As well as greater convenience and safety for patients and healthcare professionals, the risk of administering the wrong drug or giving the wrong dose is significantly reduced, according to the company.
This month saw Boehringer Ingelheim announce the winners of its chronic obstructive pulmonary disease communication award – Eloquium, which recognises journalism that extends awareness of the disease
