Posted on 18/01/2007 in Pharmaceutical Company Product News Shire has reported that Lialda (mesalamine) with multi-matrix system (MMX) technology, its orally-administered treatment for active, mild to moderate ulcerative colitis, is an effective medication for this disease.
The company has expressed hopes to launch Lialda in Europe during 2007. Lialda is a mesalamine, part of the aminosalicylates drug class which contain 5-aminosalicyclic cid for the treatment of colitis.
Phase III clinical trials have shown the efficacy of Lialda in inducing remission in patients with ulcerative colitis after eight weeks, with the drug being approved by the US Food and Drug Administration following the publication of these results.
Gary R Lichtenstein, director of the Centre for Inflammatory Bowel Diseases, said: "In clinical trials, Lialda proved to be an effective medication, providing superior rates of remission compared to placebo for people with ulcerative colitis."
He added that this medication would fill an unmet gap in simplifying treatment of colitis, being the first new mesalamine treatment available since 2000.
Containing 1.2g of mesalamine per tablet, patients can take as few as two Lialda tablets in a single daily dose, compared to other mesalamine treatments requiring three to four daily doses of up to 16 tablets.
In May 2006, Shire announced the results of two phase III clinical trials investigating a formulation of MMX mesalamine at the Los Angeles Convention Centre, showing the efficacy and safety of the treatment.Other news stories from 18/01/2007
