Posted on 18/01/2007 in Pharmaceutical Company Product News GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) has announced the initiation of a trial comparing the immunogenicity of its investigational cervical cancer vaccine Cervarix with Gardasil, an existing vaccine from Merck, Sharp and Dohme.
The trial will compare the immune responses to HPV type 16 and HPV type 18 in women aged 18-26, with secondary objectives investigating the response in older patients and other cancer types.
According to data published in the Vaccine journal last August, Cervarix, formulated with the adjuvant system AS04, induced higher antibody levels and a stronger response from immune memory when compared to the standard aluminium hydroxide adjuvant alone.
Dr Mark M Blatter, medical director of primary physicians research in Pittsburgh, commented that the development of cervical cancer vaccines was potentially the most important breakthrough in healthcare for women during his lifetime.
"This unprecedented trial, which will enrol more than 1,000 women, will provide the first scientific evidence to demonstrate how the two vaccines differ with respect to inducing strong and sustained immune responses in women who may be appropriate for vaccination," he said.
Earlier this week, GSK announced that the US department of health and human services awarded the company a contract for the development of pre-pandemic and pandemic flu vaccines.Other news stories from 18/01/2007
