3M Healthcare scoops UK safety awards

The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) has given 3M Healthcare in Clitheroe a gold medal for its high health and safety standards.

RoSPA only hands out gold medals to companies that have shown their commitment to health and safety at work at gold award standard for more than five consecutive years. Other 3M sites in Bedford, Atherstone and Bangor have been awarded president’s awards, which are only granted on completion of ten consecutive gold award standards.

The company’s Clitheroe plant produces parts for asthma inhalers and it employs approximately 160 members of staff.

David Rawlins, RoSPA’s awards manager, told the Lancashire Evening Telegraph: “3M has demonstrated how seriously it takes health and safety and we would like to see more organisations following its lead by providing a positive example.”

Bob Wilkinson, the environment, health and safety engineer at the Clitheroe commented to the same paper: “Although the site has undergone significant restructuring during 2005, focus on health and safety has continued apace and has culminated in an excellent overall safety performance.”

GE Healthcare was among other UK-based health and pharmaceutical companies to have won gold medal awards. Lundbeck Pharmaceuticals won a silver award for three years of high health and safety standards.
