NHS funding problems highlighted by report

16th March 2006

The Local Government Association (LGA) has revealed the impact of the NHS funding crisis that has emerged in the form of a ?1.8 billion shortfall for certain sectors.

Because of this, local authorities are looking to restrict the eligibility of certain elderly and disabled patients for care as a reaction to a funding shortfall.

A report from the LGA and representatives of council treasurers and social care directors found that there is a ?1.8 billion difference between what councils spend and the amount the government assumes is required.

The LGA has tied the problem with social care funding and health care funding together, suggesting one will always suffer if the balance is not correct.

“Health and social care are two sides of the same coin,” said councillor David Rogers, the LGA’s social care spokesman.

“Under-invest in one and you overstretch the other. The number of people in need of care is increasing by the day and a fair, sustainable system of funding must be introduced.”
