PRODUCT INFORMATION:
Parenteral Iron: Venofer is Iron Sucrose
Iron may be administered parenterally as iron dextran, iron sorbitol, or iron sucrose. Parenteral iron is generally reserved for use when oral therapy is unsuccessful because the patient cannot tolerate oral iron, or does not take it reliably, or if there is continuing blood loss, or in malabsorption.
Also, many patients with chronic renal failure who are receiving haemodialysis (and some who are receiving peritoneal dialysis) require iron by the intravenous route on a regular basis.
With the exception of patients with sever renal failure receiving haemodialysis, parenteral iron does not produce a faster haemoglobin response than oral iron provided that the oral iron preparation is taken reliably and is absorbed adequately.
Venofer is given by either slow intravenous injection or by intravenous infusion (calculated according to body-weight and iron deficit.
Competition:
Jectofer (AstraZeneca) is given by deep intramuscular injection and is NOT suitable for intravenous injection.
CosmoFer (Vitaline) is given by slow intravenous injection or by intravenous infusion.
The most common adverse reactions associated with iron sucrose include hypotension, cramps/leg cramps, nausea, headache, vomiting, and diarrhea. Severe, life-threatening anaphylaxis (hypotension, arrhythmias, cardiovascular shock, bronchospasm, apnea, and angioedema) is very rare, occurring in less than 0.01% of patients. This compares favorably to iron dextran, another parenteral iron product, which has an incidence of severe anaphylactic reactions of about 1%. |
