Scottish Biomedical Jobs Profile

This profile is a brief introduction for people who are seeking employment in Scientific Sales Jobs, Science Sales Jobs, Laboratory Sales Jobs, Chemistry Sales Jobs, Scientific Marketing Jobs, or Laboratory Service Engineer Jobs, and may be considering working with Scottish Biomedical.

Company Profile

Scottish Biomedical is a pre-clinical drug discovery services company focussing exclusively on early stage drug research.

Key service areas

  • Phosphodiesterase Drug Discovery Services
  • Ion Channel Services

Scottish Biomedical utilises its expertise in cell systems biology and medicinal chemistry to establish successful drug discovery collaborations with pharmaceutical and biotech clients worldwide.

In some of the company's collaborations, Scottish Biomedical is tasked with identifying and validating drug targets or discovering lead molecules, in others we carry programmes right through to the development candidate stage. Our flexible/modular approach enables drug discovery collaborations to be tailored to meet the specific requirements of our clients.

ALL OF THE INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY GENERATED DURING THE PROJECT IS OWNED BY OUR CLIENTS.

Scottish Biomedical is a member of the BioIndustry Association.

Established in 1994, Scottish Biomedical is a private, self-funded drug discovery services company located on the West of Scotland Science Park, Glasgow, Scotland.

Our capabilities and expertise are in the areas of ethical tissue acquisition, molecular biology, protein technology, primary & secondary assay development, high-throughput & high-content screening, medicinal chemistry and pharmacology.

Scottish Biomedical's scientists are experts in signal transduction.

We routinely draw upon our expertise in intracellular signalling and understanding of how a specific target interacts and functions in the cellular environment to enable us to identify desirable characteristics of drug targets and candidates.

Services Overview

Areas of Activity

  • Tissue Acquisition
  • Molecular Biology
  • Protein Technology
  • Screening
  • Cell Biology
  • Medicinal Chemistry
  • Pharmacology

Tissue Acquisition

Human tissue conforming to the strictest ethical and regulatory requirements acquired from normal, diseased and subjects receiving drug therapy (fresh or frozen) by Scottish Biomedical are readily available to support your drug discovery programs. We also can collect bloods for SNP analysis according to disease states and/or ethnicity.

Scottish Biomedical scientist routinely apply sophisticated genomic and proteomic analysis, supported by comprehensive bioinformatics tools to identify and validate novel targets for our clients.

Our pharmacologists are also able to carry out a range of ex vivo procedures to evaluate your drug candidate directly on human tissues.

Molecular Biology

We offer a comprehensive cloning and expression service covering microbial, animal and human genes. We express these genes in bacteria, yeast, baculovirus, or mammalian cell lines (stables and transients) using our SBXpress and SBXcell technologies to give functional protein for screens, assays or crystallography.

We routinely design custom micro arrays and use blotting RT PCR, antisense and siRNA technology plus SNP and proteomic analysis to validate disease target. All this is supported by our in house bioinformatics.

Protein Technology

Scottish Biomedical can express your target protein in bacteria, yeast, baculovirus, or mammalian cell lines (gram scale). Our SBXpress technologies are designed to produce quantities of active functional protein for screens, assays or crystallography within the shortest possible time.

We also perform site directed mutagenesis, produce truncated and chimera proteins and use protein engineering to modify the properties of targets.

We are experts is applying proteomics to the validation and characterization of disease targets (Bioplex protein array, 2Dgel electrophoresis, Mass Spec. Peptide mapping).

Screening

Our screening team is adept at developing and operating high content and throughput screens (fluorimetric (polarisation and FRET), radio-isotope, SPA, FLEX Station 3, bioluminescence (BRET), chemiluminescence, ALPHA and ion channels. Our laboratories are equipped with sophisticated robots and liquid handling systems (96 and 384 format) so we can rapidly screen client's own compound collections or Scottish Biomedical small molecule libraries to generate new leads.

Scottish Biomedical offer both diverse Lead Generation Libraries based around proprietary algorithms and Focused Chemical Libraries (GPCR, PDEs, Phosphatases, Kinases etc).

 Cell Biology

We have expertise in the generation and growth of primary and secondary cell lines (insect, mammalian, and human). We also are experienced in the isolation, characterisation, differentiation and expansion of human stem cells (ES lines, adult pluripotent stem cell and chord blood).

Our cell biologists have particular expertise in the elucidation of signaling pathways, the pinpointing of the site of action of drugs, and in the localization of targets in cells and tissues (laser dissection microscopy, in situ hybridization, Bioplex protein array, immune histochemistry and confocal microscopy).

Medicinal Chemistry

Our medicinal chemistry team is fully equipped for small and large-scale synthesis (up to 100g) including, combi-chem and parallel synthesis routes. We have comprehensive analytical support to ensure the veracity and purity of our compounds.

We have the latest drug design software to ensure rapid ‘Hit to Lead' optimization and drugs with favorable ADME properties.

Our chemists design, synthesize and manage diverse and focused drug discovery libraries built on innovative drug-like scaffolds.

Pharmacology

Our scientists can perform studies to demonstrate the clinical utility of drug candidates and preclinical studies to support regulatory approval.

Scottish Biomedical provides a comprehensive service for the evaluation of the efficacy of drug candidates in a range of pharmacologically-relevant disease models (cell-based, tissue based and organ bath), monitoring a range of biological parameters and relevant biomarkers (including the use of human tissues).

We also perform in vitro studies to determine and optimize the ADME profile of lead compounds (metabolic and cytochrome stability, cyto-and genotoxicity, oral absorption and BBB penetration).
