| Actelion's current products are treatments for diseases with limited patient populations, which usually have less development risk and commensurate returns. The company's strategy is to increase returns by developing products for the hospital setting and eventually, additional products aimed to the general practice market. This challenges Actelion to develop and commercialise products for larger markets than it has previously served. However, it must continue to increase sales of current products like Tracleer® ,which to date has been the main source of the company's revenue, in order to support the development of an expanded product portfolio. As Actelion expands its portfolio it may seek to mitigate unnecessary risk by forming strategic partnerships or alliances with other pharmaceutical or biopharmaceutical companies at critical time points in select product development. |
